During the EAWOP 2019 Congress a keynote presentation will be given by Prof. Michelle “Mikki” Hebl*. In this talk, she will provide an overview of her 20 year research career examining issues related to diversity and discrimination in the workplace. She will discuss the ways in which powerful people “gatekeep” or prevent others from reaching their full workplace potential. Her work specifically focuses on subtle (as opposed to more overt) forms of discrimination, and her talk will focus on many gender- and race-related research findings. She will close with suggestions for how we can individually and organizationally remediate biases and enhance our diversity-related efforts.
Mikki Hebl graduated with her B.A. from Smith College and Ph.D. from Dartmouth College. She joined the faculty at Rice University in 1998, and is currently the Martha and Henry Malcolm Lovett Professor of Psychology with a joint appointment in the Jones School. Mikki’s research focuses on workplace discrimination and the ways both individuals and organizations can remediate such discrimination and successfully manage diversity. She has approximately 150 publications, 20 teaching awards (including the most prestigious national award called the Cherry Award), research grants from NSF and NIH, and several gender-related research awards. For instance, in 2014, she was honored with the Academy of Management’s Sage Award for lifetime achievement in research advancing knowledge of gender and diversity in organizations, and in 2018, she was selected as the Woman in Academia with Outstanding Career Award from the University of Lausanne, Switzerland.
